Library Clerk (Part-Time)

Eager Free Public Library in Evansville, Wisconsin, is currently accepting applications for a part-time Library Clerk to join our team.

We are looking for an organized, creative person with a friendly demeanor who enjoys providing excellent customer service to all ages.

This position assists library patrons with circulation desk services, helps with basic computer and electronic resource use, provides readers advisory services, and completes other library work as required. Confident computer use is required. Ability to organize educational programs for adults is desired. Experience with Canva, website administration, or social media marketing is a plus.

Work schedule is typically weekdays during library daytime and evening hours, averaging 15 hours per week. Additional hours may be available to cover schedule needs, and may occasionally include Saturday hours.

Pay rate is based on experience, ranging from $14.75 – $15.47 per hour, with a guaranteed 3.75% increase on 1/1/26 to $15.30 – $16.05.

Job Description

Position: Library Clerk

Reports to: Library Director

Hours: Hours vary but may not exceed 29 hours per week on a regularly scheduled basis.  Evening and Saturday work is probable.

Job Summary

Provide excellent customer service and support efficient library operations.

Responsibilities

  • Help library patrons find materials, answer reference questions, and assist/instruct patrons on how to use library resources
  • Perform circulation desk duties, including checking materials in and out, placing holds, registering patrons, maintaining patron records, collecting fines, and reserving study rooms
  • Provide basic technological troubleshooting for patrons
  • Answer the library telephone
  • Shelve library materials and maintain materials in proper shelf order
  • Prepare library materials for circulation
  • Maintain current knowledge of library’s digital resources and physical collection to best assist patrons
  • Mend library materials
  • Assist in planning and implementing library programs
  • Process interlibrary loan requests and transits as scheduled or requested
  • Catalog library materials using copy cataloging methods as scheduled or requested
  • Other library related duties as assigned

Job Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent is required; some college preferred
  • Library experience preferred
  • Some knowledge of library materials and methods
  • Thorough knowledge of alphabet and decimal system sorting
  • Ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers, and supervisors
  • Ability to recognize confidential information and maintain patron privacy
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Knowledge of and skill in using effective English, including good grammar
  • Ability to perform clerical tasks efficiently and accurately
  • Ability to understand and carry out both written and oral instructions
  • Basic computer skills, including navigating the internet, using email, understanding file management, and using Microsoft Office
  • Experience with Canva, website management, or social media marketing is a plus
  • Experience in event planning and supervision is a plus
  • Physical ability to bend, stoop, push, reach, grasp, handwrite and type, lift, and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to assess visual cues. Far vision at 20 feet or further; near vision at 20 inches or less
  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively with others in person and over the telephone
  • Ability to arrive at work in a punctual manner and reliably assume responsibility as delegated
  • Ability to use office equipment, including photocopier, fax machine, computer running  library specific software, and other equipment as required
  • Ability to handle details, complete work with normal speed, and multitask at a busy circulation desk

Appointment and/or continued employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check prior to employment and a six-month probationary period at the start of employment.
